Nanogate AG launches first cooperation in the area of optics

Cooperation with one of the world’s leading electronics groups to adapt Dotfarm® optics technology for series production of LCD flat panel displays

Saarbrücken, 24 October 2007. Nanogate AG (ISIN DE000A0JKHC9) is embarking on cooperation in optics with one of the world’s largest electronics groups. The aim of the agreement is jointly to develop Dotfarm® technology, an innovative technology for the alignment of minute light guides, opening up new applications and markets all over the world. The initial focus is on backlighting for LCD flat screens. Just shortly after the granting of international patents, Nanogate subsidiary Nanogate Advanced Materials GmbH can thereby demonstrate an initial success toward the future implementation of Dotfarm® optics technology.

The subject of cooperation with one of Asia’s largest electronics corporations and other major suppliers is the development of backlighting for LCD flat panel displays that could be manufactured more cost-effectively using Dotfarm® optics. Conventional solutions use various kinds of light directing films that lead to considerable expense for manufacturers. Dotfarm® optics as a nanostructured surface consists of millions of diffractive gratings, which can be individually set, programmed and properly aligned to substitute conventional light directing films. In such a way, light can not only be shaped in a targeted way, but also enhanced in brightness. Powerful miniaturisation of individual gratings means that this technology can also be used to refine even minute components. In this way the costs of backlights for displays could be reduced by between 20% and 50%. Nanogate has plans for further cooperation agreements with leading companies in this industry in the future.

“This first development agreement proves the enormous potential of Dotfarm® optics,” says Ralf Zastrau, CEO of Nanogate AG. “Jointly with our Asian partners we aim to develop our innovative technology further for use in series production. Initial cooperation in the optics segment takes us a step closer to our strategic objective of addressing large markets with potential revenues in at least significant double-digit millions and with high margins.”
